Swami Vivekananda

Born as Narendra Datta in an affluent Indian Bengali family, Swami Vivekananda got a Bachelor’s Degree from Scottish Church College. He gave the gift of Vedanta and Indian spiritual philosophy to the rest of world.

“Cyclonic Monk from India”, this was the name given to him by the western media after his famous speech at 1893 Parliament of the World’s Religion in Chicago, where he introduced Sanatana Dharma philosophy to the west. Before his famous speech, before enlightening the world, he swam miles & miles & sat on a rock in the middle of the ocean of Kanyakumari & meditated. That rock is known as the Vivekananda Rock today. It is said that he was very nervous, & prayed to the deity of knowledge Goddess Saraswathi, after that he addressed the huge gathering starting with “my sisters & brothers of America”, for which he got a standing ovation for 2 minutes. He stated “Greetings from the nation’s on behalf of the most ancient order of monks in the world, the Vedic order of Sanyasis, a religion which has taught the world both tolerance & universal acceptance. He also quoted two passages from “Shiva Mahima Stortram” (from the Hindu Sanatana Scriptures) which meant the following –  “As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so O Lord, the different paths which men take though different tendencies, various through they appear crooked or straight, all lead Thee. “Whomsoever comes to me (God), through whatsoever form, I reach him, all men are struggling through paths that in the end lead to me”.

In a short speech he explained the Vedic Indian Sanatan Dharma’s spiritual philosophy to the western world for which this philosophy was unheard and unknown.

The New York Herald quoted “After hearing him (Swami Vivekananda), we feel how foolish it is to send missionaries to this learned nation (India).”

His spiritual Guru was Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, who had given the gift of Vedanta and Indian spiritual philosophy to the world, especially the western world. Deeply inspired by his Guru, Swami Vivekananda founded Ramakrishna Math & Mission. He travelled across India for 5 years & visited centers of knowledge, met different people to acquire spiritual knowledge. He had tremendous intellect. He always focused on teaching universal principals rather than personalities. He stated, “All powers in the universe are already ours, its we who have put our hands before our eyes & cry that its dark”. He gave us the concept of “Darirdra Narayan”  which means serving poor is like serving God. His foundation Ramakrishna Mission is doing the same till today keeping the same ideology in mind.

Ramakrishna Mission have centers all over the world around 214, including USA, Canada, UK, Russia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Fiji, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Netherland, Singapore etc. serving the society following the ideology of Swamy Vivekananda & Ramakrishna Paramhamsa.

Since his Swami Vivekananda childhood excelled in gymnastic, music, yoga & meditation, he used to be an excellent student & orator and had great interest in history, philosophy & western viewpoint. While studying in college he met with Ramakrishna Paramhamsa & became a great disciple of him & later became a Monk. He from here listened to his inner voice & after the death of his Guru, he made it the great mission of his life to spread the thoughts of Ramakrishna Paramhamsa to the whole world.

He started travelling across India as a Monk & witnessed poverty & sufferings of the masses. He realized that masses have lost faith in their capacity to improve their current situation. It was first of all necessary to infuse into their mind’s faith in themselves, which the principal of Vedanta, could do.

Swami Vivekananda had given the concept of religion as a universal experience of transcendent reality which is common for the humanity. He told the world that science & religion is not contradictory, but religion is itself is a “Science of consciousness”. His messages frees religions from superstition, dogmas, doctrines, religious intolerance, hatred, priesthood, racial superiority, freed mankind from the burden of “my religion is the purest and true in nature”, & reminded the 10,000 years old Sanatan view point “Vashudaiva Kuttumbakkam” which means that the world is a big family.

His concept of “Jiva is Shiva” means that God resides in every human being. This thought breaks the degradation in human being & treats all human being equal as “all human beings are children of the same divine parent”. He was a Karma Yogi, he stated “Arise, awake & do not stop until the goal is achieved”. His message was focused on “Karma”, which is the core principal of Sanatan Dharma, he says “You cannot believe in God, until you believe in yourself”. He believes that “No one can teach you; no one can make you spiritual, you have to grow from the inside out. There is no other teacher but your own soul”.

Swami Vivekananda was a master in yoga & meditation. According to claims, he was so focused that he could read a book & memorize by just a glance. He succeeded his prophecy of not living beyond the age of 40 years. One fine day he instructed his disciples, not to disturb him as he was going for his final meditation which is Mahasamadhi  & he breathed his last, just within few minutes as per claims by his disciples. He attained “Moksha” as his “Pran Vayu” (soul) went out by his “supreme Chakra” (one of Sapta Kundali) as he was a Yogi with “SAPTA KUNDALI JAGRIT” (human having special powers need to be awaken by Yoga & as per doctors there was a blast in his brain caused his death.

Om Shanti.
