OTT might be the most important abbreviation which you’ve never heard of.
OTT stands for Over The Top and is the industry term for services which enables you to stream content via the internet directly to your TV. It very simple just download the app or plug in your device and way you go! and the best thing is that you don’t need a standalone cable tv connection.
You may be familiar to OTT platforms!!!
Are you binge watching your favorite shows over streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime or Sony Liv etc…. If you are doing this you very well are familiar with the OTT platforms.
It’s not the subscription video giants like Netflix who pose the biggest threat to YouTube and their income. Instead, it is the small business owners and content creators who are moving away from the platform to make their money elsewhere.
Top content creators have off late been moving out of youtube to other platforms like instagram which offers IGTV, which allows content creators to post videos and images from the same platform itself. Also many top creators are creating a SVOD (subscription video on demand) service where users pay monthly fee to access premium content & tutorials.
The SVOD approach allows creators to maintain control over their finances and money making methodology thereby reducing restrictions a platform like youtube would place on his content.
That’s bad news for YouTube, who undoubtedly would like to be targeting more ads to the hundreds of thousands of people who visit his channel each month.
You can see this trend happening across lots of different fields as well – You Tubers, both large and small, have opted to pull their premium content off YouTube and take control of the monetization.
Why is this happening?
The road to YouTube success is long and hard. Although you’re often regaled with stories of young millionaire youtubers and rags to riches, it’s a much different story for your average YouTuber.
A study by Bloomberg shows that 96.5% of YouTubers won’t make enough money through advertising to crack the US poverty line. While your business should extend beyond advertising, it doesn’t fill the up-and-coming video creator with much hope.
